When it comes to my blog I usually try to follow a schedule so I only write twice a week (keep in mind that I have a 3 months old baby that I need to take care of and enjoy with!). However, I have something in my chest that I have to put out there because I’m so upset that I’m about to lose it!

Yesterday I was looking for an image related to “breastfeeding” in Pixabay ** (an amazing repository of free images). I started the search and I was glad to see that there were quite a few images that I could use in one of my future posts. However, something got my attention… Under two of the images, the tags associated with a breastfeeding mother were “Act, Woman, Female, Naked, Erotic“… Erotic?? WTF?????
I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing. How can you say that those pictures are erotic? Is it because you can see the breast of the breastfeeding mother? Is it because you can see a bit of the nipple?? Taking into consideration that there is a baby in each of the pictures how could someone say that this is God-damn erotic?
So this is when it hit me… This is the huge issue that we have today and this is seriously impacting the breastfeeding mamas out there:
As long as people keep on considering the natural act of breastfeeding as something “erotic” we won’t be able to eliminate the stigma of breastfeeding in public.
The sad thing is that it is absolutely fine that a woman shows her cleavage and no one is offended (and actually no one should be…) but then we see a breastfeeding mama and we treat her as a monster because she is showing a bit of skin…
It really shocks me that everybody would tell you “Breast is best, breast is best” when it comes to making the decision about breastfeeding or using formula with your baby but then, the real message that we get from society is that “you’d better do it in the intimacy of your own house and don’t you dare going outside with your newborn because we don’t want to see you feeding him!! Ewwww!!”
Sarcasm aside, I have to ask myself and ask everybody reading: When did society turn something as natural as feeding a baby into something to be ashamed of? What can we do to eliminate this issue? In any case, I’ll do my best to spread the word and support all the breastfeeding mamas that have to deal with this problem everyday…
